It gets really old hearing people wanting to hit up the Oil companies and steal their profits....supply....demand....I guess nobody has heard of this, or conveniently forgets.
Last I checked Nelson D. Rockefeller (Standard Oil) helped build our country to what it is today by means of capitalism spawning the industrial revolution. Vaulting us to the top of the world economies.
Here are some consumption numbers from 1980-2006...
I don't know about you...but I would be really pissed if I put in thousands of dollars of investments into a company for the government to take away my share profits...HORSESHIT!
FYI...
The laws of supply and demand state that the equilibrium market price and quantity of a commodity is at the intersection of consumer demand and producer supply.
Quantity supplied equals quantity demanded, that is, equilibrium.
Equilibrium implies that price and quantity will remain there if it begins there.
If the price for a good is below equilibrium, consumers demand more of the good than producers are prepared to supply. This defines a shortage of the good. A shortage results in the price being bid up. Producers will increase the price until it reaches equilibrium.
If the price for a good is above equilibrium, there is a surplus of the good. Producers are motivated to eliminate the surplus by lowering the price. The price falls until it reaches equilibrium.

Furley,
Although the principles of economics concerning supply and demand are well explained on your behalf and fully agreed to in philosophy and theory on my behalf.
The problem with this particular model is that there is no "fair competition" within the “open market”!
First we have OPEC? What is OPEC for? OPEC is in place for only one reason, and that is to control the market and not allow countries to openly compete for a product based on supply/demand.
We import more from non OPEC countries on aggregate then OPEC nations. Take a look at this data: http://tonto.eia.doe.gov/dnav/pet/pet_move_impcus_a2_nus_ep00_im0_mbbl_m.htm.
We import almost twice as much from Canada than we do from any other single OPEC nation?
If I am the only drug dealer on the corner then I can fix anything I want for the end buyer. If I have two drug dealers now we can see who will give me what I need for the right price.
The second thing that needs to happen is to completely ELMINATE the Department of Energy, all of the politicians who are on their boards, committees, and any special interest groups involved with the DOE.
The DOE is TOTALLY AND COMPLETELY UNCONSTITUTIONAL. They in my opinion are the guilty party and not the OIL Companies by not letting US compete for energy of any type in a fair market system that can work in different ways throughout our country and efficiently.
The fact that we are the greatest country in the world, the most generous, the most forgiving and THE MOST SACRIFICE from our MILITARY SOLDIERS who die for our freedom and others throughout the world!!!
I hope and pray that our military personnel are not being used for big corporations who are actually run by government officials with deep pockets only to maintain control.
I EXPECT and DEMAND that we get a little REACH AROUND! The OIL Companies need to distance themselves from Governments and stop pretending that they are a private business held by private people.
If we can declare a war without constitutional approval then we can drill without the permission of the EPA!!!! They are the other mother fucking cock sucking mother fuckers of an organization that needs to be completely, totally and unequivocally destroyed from the face of this earth!!!!!
I understand we get the majority of our oil from Canada, however, with Asia and Oceanic countries now using over 125% more oil all from OPEC, their increased demand makes sense why OPEC wants to raise their prices per barrel.
Hell, everything you pick up has a MADE IN CHINA sticker or embossing on it.
Right now every telephone operating job is in India and almost all good are imported from China...they have the money right now, I can see why OPEC wants to capitalize on that.
You are right the DOE, as most regulatory departments, are unconstitutional and have shackled our ability to grow with the times.
You can thank environmentalist movements for going too far, as well as utopian idealists for attempting to make a "perfect world".
Realization that humans are imperfect, and we cannot ever become perfect must come about.
Those groups of people with delusions that Heaven can be created on Earth, are bound to drive us all into a self created "hell".
